HONG KONG vs LEUNG CHUN-YING (January 1, 2013): Al-Jazeera

The title of an Al-Jazeera article released on January 1, 2013 is “Hong Kong protesters urge leader (Leung Chun-ying) to resign” (Web-site/URL: http://www.aljazeera.com/news/asia-pacific/2013/01/2013119593990515.html).

“Tens of thousands of protesters have marched on Hong Kong’s streets, DEMANDING GREATER DEMOCRACY and THE RESIGNATION of the city’s embattled leader” (LEUNG CHUN-YING aka “CY Leung)”.

Al Jazeera‘s Rob McBride, reporting from Hong Kong, said Leung Chun-Ying had been embroiled in scandal ever since he became chief executive six months ago (July 1, 2012)”.

“Our correspondent said some of the problems “stemmed from changes to his LUXURY home which were technically against the law“. Again, like many citiesHong Kong is a city/an area where many people CANNOT AFFORD “luxuries”In other words, in Hong Konglike many other cosmopolitan citiesthere is a HUGE gap between the rich and poor.

“Leung has acknowledged and apologized for the structures, which were built WITHOUT PLANNING PERMISSION and include a wooden trellis (summerhouse) and a glass enclosure”There are many things to note hereFirst, we must note CULTURAL DIFFERENCES because in countries such as THE US and THE UK, “a glass enclosure” WOULD NOT be considered a luxury, since almost everyone is allowed to CARRY GUNS. This is especially true in THE US, where ALMOST EVERYONE is allowed to carry gunsIn these cases, “glass enclosures” become NECESSARY and even ESSENTIAL to prevent armed intruders from barging into our homes and killing us in our sleepHowever, a “wooden trellis” or summerhouse WOULD be considered a luxury“without permission” is the BIGGEST deal because just like when his predecessor DONALD TSANG accepted favors from tycoons (Web-site/URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Tsang), this gives us the impression that WE must follow laws and regulations while POLITICIANS DO NOTThis is precisely why Leung’s “acknowledgment” of and “apology for” the luxury structure IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH for many Hongkongers. “He subsequently explained those things to legislators here and also to the public. Many people believe he has been economical with the truth“. In other words, CY Leung has been PICKING and CHOOSING WHEN TO tell “the truth” which suggests that HE HAS SOMETHING TO HIDE which, againIS NOT good. “Some peoplelegislators (for example) – have accused him of downright LYING. HE HAS A CREDIBILITY PROBLEM. Thousands of people here JUST DON’T BELIEVE HIMTHERE’S NOTHING WORSE than having “a credibility problem”.

According to 27-year-old university student Billy Li…”as the demonstrators set off from a park (Victoria Park) to march to the government’s harborfront headquarters (in Tamar)”, “We have to keep voicing our concerns even though THE SITUATION IS GETTING WORSEWe should “voice our concern” EVEN MORE in this case.

“Holding up posters of Leung portrayed as a VAMPIRE and a WOLF, the protesters – some waving flags from the British colonial era – chanted “Give us UNIVERSAL SUFFRAGE IMMEDIATELY and “STEP DOWN, Leung Chun-ying”Of courseNEITHER of these demands (neither “immediate universal suffrage” nor CY Leung’s resignation) will be satisfied/grantedIn fact, “universal suffrage” has now turned into “universal” SUFFERINGAlso notice that “some (were) waving flags from the BRITISH COLONIAL ERAHow will CY Leung respond to this? If DONALD TSANG was still in power/had any influence, he would surely be HYSTERICAL and rush off to Beijing on one of his ridiculous “duty visits” to COMPLAIN about everyone who disagrees with him.

Finally, “Jackie Hung, a spokeswoman for protest organizer Civil Human Rights Front, told the AFP news agency”, “We want to PUSH FOR Leung’s resignation to further push for democratic elections in Hong Kong”.  People can “push for Leung’s resignation”but again, they are EXTREMELY UNLIKELY to get it because CHINA wants Leung in power. “Because we DON’T have a DEMOCRATIC government, most of the policies introduced by this government DO NOT directly reflect the interests of the people“.
