An Inappropriate Relationship Between A TRACK COACH & A STUDENT ATHLETE: CNN

HALL OF FAME women’s track and field coach Bev Kearney, whose story of recovery from a paralyzing auto accident inspired people around the country, has resigned due to an “intimate CONSENSUAL relationship” with a University of Texas athlete in 2002, the school announced Saturday night (January 5 2013)”“consensual” is DEFENSIVE (Web-site/URL:

“The head of the university’s legal affairs department (Patti Ohlendorf) said in a written statement that Kearney WAS a GOOD person who was IMPORTANT TO THE SCHOOL“. Key Word: “was” which is PAST tenseSo, this IS NOT the case anymore. “However, she made THIS TERRIBLE MISTAKE and used UNACCEPTABLY POOR JUDGMENTin having this relationship“. “unacceptably poor judgment”, of course, is A DAMNING CRITICISM.

“The relationship began 10 1/2 years ago and ended “at least about eight years ago”This sounds like the JORDAN POWERS and RICHARD HOOKER scandal which started when POWERS was a HIGH SCHOOL FRESHMANwhich would’ve been UNDERAGE and in CALIFORNIA people are underage longer because in CALIFORNIA the age of sexual consent is 18 instead of 16 like it is in most other states.

“Kearney told the newspaper (the Austin-American Statesman)” “You DESTROY YOURSELF. You start QUESTIONING HOW COULD YOU MAKE SUCH A JUDGMENTHow could you make SUCH AN ERROR after all the years? You can get CONSUMED (by it)”.

“A CNN story in August (2012) profiled the coach, who learned to walk again after she was injured in a December 26, 2002, accident that killed two of her friends”.

“Thrown more than 50 feet from an SUV, she suffered EXTENSIVE SPINAL INJURIES that left her PARTIALLY PARALYZED“.

“Kearney said SHE NEVER DOUBTED HER ABILITY TO WALK AGAIN and continued to lead her team from her hospital bed“.

When they told me I was paralyzed, it went in one ear and out the next … because I HAD TO GET UP AND COACH“. This was inspiringSadly/Unfortunately, this IS NOT how Kearney’s story ends.

“Track practices were recorded and then played for Kearney on a VCR in her hospital room”.

Because I was an INTUITIVE coach … whatever it is you need to do, I can describe it in a way that you INTERNALIZE it and you feel it WITHOUT me having to demonstrate it“, which makes it easier because people DON’T have to hear a coach NAG them all day long.

“She also started a foundation that connects young people with mentors”. Well, Bev Kearney IS NO LONGER a “mentor” to “young people” because how can people possibly “mentor” people she might SEXUALLY EXPLOIT/TAKE ADVANTAGE OF? 

“If I can expose you to the best … it has a great chance of INSPIRING you to be THE BEST. How can Kearney do this when she is accused of SEXUAL MISCONDUCT? Kearney is now “the best” at DOING NO GOOD.

“(My athletes) would say that I’m TOUGH. That I believe in being THE BEST you can be at ALL times. “I am going to DEMAND their best and I am RELENTLESS at it“. So Kearney “demands (the) best” out of her athletes/students, but not HERSELF? This is an example of Bev Kearney NOT following HER OWN rules and of DOUBLE STANDARDS.

“The paper said her attorney, Derek A. Howard, issued a statement, which said in part: “We believe that Ms. Kearney has been subjected to a double standard and hasRECEIVED FAR HARSHER PUNISHMENT than that given to her MALE counterparts who have engaged in similar conduct. … It is a shame that this REMARKABLY TALENTED female African-American coach, who has devoted her life to helping others, is being BULLIED and SCAPEGOATED by the University of Texas”. “received far harsher punishment than that being given to her male counterparts” and  “scapegoating” are the latest examples of “Blaming and criticizing”  (Web-site/URL: and “received far harsher punishment than that being given to her male counterparts” is also an example of “We think they made us mad; they think we made them mad and here we go” (Web-site/URL:

“Ohlendorf DENIED Sunday (January 6, 2013) that gender played a role in the university’s review and said she knows of NO OTHER “UT head coach who has entered into such a relationship with a student-athlete on his or her team“. Kearney is clearly DEFENSIVE here (Web-site/URL:

“Howard said Sunday (January 6, 2013) that Kearney was given until Monday at noon to resign or she would be fired”.

“He said the relationship wasn’t specifically against school policy, but the rules require someone in a supervisory role to report such a relationship”.

It’s NOT a terminable offenseShe WAS a perfect coach before and prior to the relationship“, PAST tense. “She HAD a pristine record“, PAST tense. “Why anyone would think she is not a suitable coach is MIND-BOGGLING to me“. Again, this is DEFENSIVE (Web-site/URL:

“In an e-mail to CNN Sunday night (January 6, 2013), Ohlendorf called such a relationship “unprofessional and UNACCEPTABLE“, again just like GAO WEI and CUI XILING. “We told Coach Kearney and Mr. Howard that such a relationship CROSSES THE LINE OF TRUST placed in the head coach for all aspects of the athletic program and the best interests of the student-athletes in the program”.

Finally, “Ohlendorf said the school is not naming the student, citing privacy laws”. “We respect her privacy and appreciate her cooperation during our review“.

AgainIT DOESN’T MATTER whether Kearney was Hall of Fame caliber or not. The sexual misconduct ENDED HER CAREER IN DISGRACEThis should remind us of GAO WEI and CUI XILINGbecause GAO WEI got into the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) because of A RELATIONSHIP (his “FUTURE wife” at the time) and CUI XILING took years to complete a Ph.D program that most people take 3-5 years to completebut that was because she had kids in 3.5 years on PARENTAL and RELATIVES’ NAGGING (as crazy & irrational as that sounds)This is also the latest case where we can say that Kearney “DID NOT discharge (her) duties in a responsible way, in a way that the (university) and (SOCIETY) has a right to expect (her) to behave”, making this yet another case/example of “professional DISGRACE and RUIN (Web-site/URL: This should have happened to GAO & CUI. These two should have received career-ending letters of reprimand because CUI had 2 kids in 3.5 years (so she was HAVING KIDS when she should have been focusing on her work/research which goes a long way in explaining why she only had publications in years of Ph.D study) and GAO NEVER worked anywhere other than CUHK prior to obtaining his PhD in 2010.  Instead, they are now with QCRI (Web-site/URL: and HONG KONG SHUE YAN UNIVERSITY respectively (Web-site/URL: Perhaps GAO is now HAVING AN AFFAIR
