The title of a Bloomberg article released on February 26 2013 is “Senate Confirms Hagel to Lead Pentagon Amid PARTISAN FEUD” (Web-site/URL: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-02-26/senate-clears-way-to-confirm-chuck-hagel-to-head-pentagon.html).
“The Senate confirmed Chuck Hagel as Secretary of Defense, after weeks of PARTISAN ACRIMONY (harshness/bitterness) over President Barack Obama’s choice to head the Pentagon in a time of budget-cutting and evolving threats from TERRORISM to CYBER WARFARE“. “cyber warfare”, of course, comes most notably from CHINA where the number of blocked web-sites is simply RIDICULOUS (Web-site/URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_websites_blocked_in_the_People’s_Republic_of_China).
“The nomination was approved on a 58-41 vote hours after the Senate acted to limit debate, cutting off the first filibuster against a nominee for defense secretary. The former Republican senator from Nebraska, a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, will replace retiring Defense Secretary Leon Panetta”.. This was basically a PARTY-LINE VOTE, given that the distribution of Democrats:Republicans was 53-45 after the 2012 Senate elections (Web-site/URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Senate_elections,_2012) with 5 REPUBLICANS joining their Democratic colleagues IN SUPPORT OF Hagel and 2 abstentions.
“in an e-mailed statement”, Obama said: “I will be counting on Chuck’s JUDGMENT and counsel as we end the war in Afghanistan, bring our troops home, stay ready to meet the threats of our time and keep our military the finest fighting force in the world”. A president must be able to “(count) on” the “judgment” of his advisors.
“Republicans, who have criticized Hagel for his past positions — from his opposition to the troop surge during the Iraq war to his comments on the influence of what he once called the “Jewish LOBBY” — were readying for new fights with Hagel as the steward of the Pentagon’s DIMINISHING funds”. Again Republicans are FIERCELY protective of ISRAEL and “diminishing funds” once again reinforces this notion that POLITICS is increasingly about MONEY these days.
According to Sen. John McCain, Ranking Member on the Senate Armed Services Committee, “(speaking) this month (February, 2013) during floor debate”, “There are those of us who seek to CUT waste, fraud and abuse from the Department of Defense. Senator Hagel seeks SOMETHING ELSE ENTIRELY — to CUT military capabilities that serve as tools to ensure our continued engagement through the world in support of America’s interests and those of our allies”.
“Senator Richard Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 Democratic leader, said Hagel’s abilities are widely recognized. Hagel has been endorsed by 13 former secretaries of defense, state, and national security advisers of both parties, he pointed out”. “Men who have had that responsibility (as Defense Secretary) trust Chuck Hagel and so do I”. Is this an INDEPENDENT assessment?
“Republicans said Hagel has been weakened by the confirmation process. No defense secretary has been confirmed with more than 11 votes in opposition, said Senator John Cornyn of Texas, the No. 2 Republican leader (Senate Minority Whip)”. “He will take office with THE WEAKEST support of any defense secretary in modern history, which will make him LESS effective in his job”. Now that the GOP can’t go after President Obama anymore (since the President WON’T be on the ballot anymore), they are surely jockeying for the 2016 presidential race now.
“In announcing Hagel as his nominee on Jan. 7 (2013), Obama called the Vietnam veteran “the leader our troops deserve” and said he will be able to manage the “TOUGH FISCAL CHOICES” necessary amid SHRINKING budgets”. “tough FISCAL choices” and “shrinking BUDGETS” again are about MONEY. HERE WE GO AGAIN.
“Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin, a Michigan Democrat, said Hagel’s confirmation would mark the first time the Defense Department would be led by a Vietnam veteran who remained an enlisted man throughout his military career. Hagel’s background provides “invaluable experience” at a time of intense BUDGET pressures and continuing combat operations overseas”, There’s that word again: “budget”. Perhaps a CHINESE HOUSEWIFE contributed to this article. These people like HELEN HUANG in FREMONT, CALIFORNIA ONLY consider CHEAP vs. EXPENSIVE and think that they can do property management with NO formal training or education. “in floor debate”, Levin said: “The president needs to have a secretary of defense in whom he has TRUST, who will give him UNVARNISHED (or UNBIASED) advice, a person of INTEGRITY and one who has a personal understanding of the consequences of decisions relative to the use of military FORCE”. There are FOUR things to note here. First we can link “trust”, “unvarnished (i.e. UNBIASED) advice” and “integrity” together. Again, we can bring up the recruitment of GAO WEI and CUI XILING to the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) here because the recruitment of was clearly BIASED and VIOLATED “trust” which made those recruitments THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF “integrity”. GAO basically nagged CUHK to recruit CUI because he had a PhD and therefore, his then-GIRLFRIEND HAD TO HAVE an M.Phil. As it turns out, Gao DIDN’T have an M.Phil. In fact he married his then-girlfriend ONLY to get into CUHK. He got to CUHK TO DO his M.Phil. Making this ten times worse is that OTHER PEOPLE HAD TO HEAR THAT NONSENSE FOR A WHOLE YEAR and CUI is COMPLETELY INEPT, having published only THREE papers to date, ZERO during her EIGHT years as a PhD student (Web-site/URL: http://www.hksyu.edu/ba/CuiXiling.html),,but having enough time to have enough sex to have TWO kids in 3.5 years. Of course, we know how problematic the “force and pain technique” is (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI), which incidentally GAO also used. These two basically acted like THE CHINESE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG had to be interested in their love life which, of course, is RIDICULOUS. This is the culture of Chinese higher education. People can get into universities and employment based on factors which are COMPLETELY UNRELATED to academics or research. “Senator Hagel CERTAINLY HAS those critically important qualifications and he is WELL QUALIFIED (?) to lead the Department of Defense”. This is THE DEMOCRATIC INTERPRETATION (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAXlKqF7kW4).
Finally, “In today’s (February 26, 2013) key vote to limit debate, 18 Republicans voted with Democrats. Among them were McCain, Richard Shelby of Alabama, Roy Blunt of Missouri, Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, Orrin Hatch of Utah and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska”. MCCAIN? THIS IS A SURPRISE, given how TOUGH McCain seemed to be on Hagel when the former questioned the latter over THE IRAQ TROOP SURGE (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAXlKqF7kW4). Also, RICHARD SHELBY is a surprise, because Shelby as we know is one of THE MOST CONSERVATIVE senators from one of THE MOST CONSERVATIVE states (Alabama).
To conclude, let’s return to a point that Sen. CORNYN made: “No defense secretary has been confirmed with more than 11 votes in opposition”. This (Hagel’s confirmation) is clearly and easily THE MOST PARTISAN confirmation hearing we’ve ever seen. Well, there were 41 votes AGAINST Hagel so ONLY WILL TELL IF Hagel is an effective/competent Defense Secretary or not.
