The title of a recently released Al-Jazeera article is “Pope Francis embarks on HISTORIC papacy” (Web-site/URL: http://www.aljazeera.com/news/europe/2013/03/201333195113420293.html). This is “historic” because Francis is the first LATIN AMERICAN Pope.
“Selection of Latin American to lead world’s Catholics is described as “geographic and cultural UPHEAVAL” for Vatican”.
How are people handling this “upheaval?” “Vatican expert Luigi Accatoli told the AFP news agency” “The choice of Bergoglio shows that the Church is determined not to remain in mourning for the crisis in Europe, but has OPENED ITS DOORS to the REVITALIZING energy of Catholicism’s biggest continent“. WE NEED TO MAINTAIN an “open door” UNLIKE CHINA and NORTH KOREA. Also notice “revitalize”. The Catholic Church seems to have become STALE lately, However how are we going to “revitalize” the Catholic Church with another pope OVER THE AGE OF 70? Wasn’t the idea to pick a Pope UNDER the age of 60? Pope Francis is now 76, the same age that Pope BENEDICT was when he became pontiff. “It is a MOMENTOUS (?) step“.
“The Italian daily La Repubblica, under the headline “REVOLUTION (?) at St Peter’s (Basilica)”, said the election of the former Jesuit priest represented a “geographic and cultural UPHEAVAL” for the Vatican”. Will this “revolution” and “upheaval” be positive or negative?
“Pray for me“, the new pontiff, dressed in the white robes of a pope for the first time, urged the crowd”.
“Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, the protodeacon, made the announcement with the Latin words, Habemus papam, meaning “We have a pope“.
“JUBILANT (?) Argentines poured into churches, some crying and praying, after the announcement at the Vatican”. Is this “jubilation” JUSTIFIED? This “jubilation” is clearly brought on by NATIONALISM/PATRIOTISM.
“This is A BLESSING for Argentina”, one woman SHOUTED on a Buenos Aires street”.
According to Jorge Andres Lobato, “a 73-year-old retired state prosecutor”, “I hope he changes all the LUXURY that exists in the Vatican, that he steers the church in a MORE HUMBLE (?) direction, something closer to the gospel”. “steers the church in a more humble direction?” So, Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI WERE NOT “humble?” That’s certainly an interesting INTERPRETATION (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).
“Al Jazeera‘s Teresa Bo, reporting from Buenos Aires, described the reaction in the Argentinian capital as “ABSOLUTE SHOCK. (because) NOBODY expected him to become pope“. Perhaps then, we need to modify our EXPECTATIONS (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).”People here are CRYING“.
“Father Robert Gahl of Holy Cross College (MA)told Al Jazeera that THE NAME Francis was “indicative of something HISTORICAL“. “Gahl described as “STRIKING” the reaction to the new pope, which he said was “way SUPERIOR to what occurred eight years ago (2005), which may be A SURPRISE to some“.
Finally, Jack Valero, “director of the Catholic Voices organisation”, finished off: “Much was made about whether the new pope would be one who focused on pastoral care – speaking to the faithful AROUND THE WORLD or would he be one who tries to REFORM (ONLY) the Vatican”.
So, Pope Francis certainly has A LOT on his plate. ONLY TIME WILL TELL IF he can deliver on this HYPE.
