The title of a recently released Al-Jazeera article is “Obama PUSHES at G-20 summit for strikes on Syria” (Web-site/URL: http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2013/9/5/tension-marks-obamasarrivalinrussiaforg20summit.html).
“President Barack Obama arrived Thursday (September 5, 2013) in St. Petersburg, Russia, for the Group of 20 (G-20) economic summit — which appears likely to be less about global economic affairs than an impending U.S. strike in Syria”.
“Obama briefly shook hands when met by G-20 host, and KEY SYRIA ALLY, Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a STEELY exchange that lastedless than 20 seconds”. “steely exchange” suggests that the relationship between Obama and Putin is ICE COLD. Again, THIS IS EXPECTED, because Russia, like Syria, is UNDEMOCRATIC (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).
“In an MSNBC interview televised later Thursday evening (September 5, 2013), Secretary of State John Kerry reiterated the president’s stance on PUNISHING Assad for the ALLEGED use of sarin gas on civilians“. There are TWO things to note here. First “punishing” a dictator will involve the “force and pain technique” in this case. On top of this/In addition, most wars are started on “allegations”, translated colloquially “We think they made us mad; they think we made them mad and here we go” (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI). “We are TRYING to enforce the international norm” against chemical weapons”, “THAT’S ALL THIS MILITARY STRIKE AIMS TO DO“. Well, it’s clear that people AREN’T convinced which means that the US IS NOT “trying” hard enough.
“Also Thursday (September 5, 2013), Vice President Biden and Obama’s Deputy National Security Adviser Tony Blinken hosted a bicameral meeting on Syria with members of Congress in the White House Situation Room, and Biden made calls to members on both sides of the aisle in the House and in the Senate” reinforcing the Obama administration’s FULL-COURT PRESS for approval of a strike against Assad.
“Obama’s presence in Russia also puts him in the same country as National Security Agency (NSA) leaker Edward Snowden for the first time since the American fugitive fled to Moscow earlier this year (2013)”. Snowden has now been granted TEMPORARY asylum in Russia (Web-site/URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Snowden). ”Both Syria and Snowden have been sore points in an already strained U.S.-Russianrelationship, fueling THE NOTION THAT (?) Obama and Putin can’t get along”. There are TWO things to note here. First, the “US-Russian relationship” is not just “strained”; it is EXTREMELY/INCREDIBLY “strained”. Secondly, “Obama and Putin can’t along”. This IS NOT “a notion”. This is A FACT.
“The first round at the summit seemingly went to PUTIN, as China, the European Union (EU), (and) the BRICS – Brazil, Russia, India, China andSouth Africa — and Pope Francis warned of THE DANGERS of military intervention without the approval of the U.N. Security Council”. It’s also important to note that CHINA is also AN ALLY of Assad. People die in China from SUFFOCATION/LACK OF INFORMATION FROM THE OUTSIDE WORLD. Again, the number of web-sites blocked in the People’s Republic of China, excluding HONG KONG and TAIWAN, is RIDICULOUS (Web-site/URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_websites_blocked_in_China).
“The Pope, who leads the world’s 1.2 billion Roman Catholics, urged the G-20 leaders in a letter to “LAY ASIDE THE FUTILE PURSUIT of a military solution“. With the Pope focused on PEACE and Obama insisting on WAR with Syria, this DOES NOT seem to be happening.
“Putin, in an Associated Press interview ahead of the summit, PLAYED DOWN (?) personal tensions with Obama”. “President Obama HASN’T been elected by the American people in order to be pleasant to Russia. And YOUR HUMBLE SERVANT (?) HASN’T been elected by the people of Russia to be PLEASANT (?) to someone either“. VLADIMIR PUTIN is NEITHER “humble” NOR “pleasant”. Also the election of Putin WASN’T FAIR. It was RIGGED.
“The White House has stressed that while the two will cross paths at various meetings, Obama WILL NOT be meeting one-on-one with Putinduring his stay in St. Petersburg” again because Obama and Putin ARE NOT close.
“STILL STRUGGLING to convince lawmakers at home about taking action against Syria, Obama will seek to win over world leaders RELUCTANT to get drawn in to another U.S.-led military intervention in a Mideast nation. Although Syria isn’t formally on the agenda for the summit, the country’s bloody civil war is primed to become a central topic of conversation”. Again there are TWO things to note here. First, world leadersstill seem to be EXTREMELY “reluctant” to confront Assad with/by force. Secondly, once again, the US IS NOT popular in the Middle East, especially recently.
“Meanwhile, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy warned on Thursday (September 5, 2013) against a military response in Syria, aligning the group more closely with Putin than Obama in how best to respond to the alleged chemical attack. Van Rompuy called the attack “abhorrent (horrific)” (obviously) and a crime against humanity, but said a military strike WOULD NOT help resolve the crisis“. “Only aPOLITICAL solution can end THE TERRIBLE BLOODSHED, GRAVE VIOLATIONS OF HUMAN RIGHTS and the FAR-REACHING destruction of Syria“. “A political solution” MAY NOT BE POSSIBLE.
“COMPLICATING Obama’s efforts to present A UNITED FRONT (?) on Syria is the ongoing debate in Congress over whether to approve a strike — a debate OBAMA invited when he decided Saturday (August 31, 2013) to seek congressional approval”. Of course this was an adventure because as we know, many in Congress DISAGREE with the President. ”Some lawmakers view him as trying to preserve HIS OWN credibility after issuing an ultimatum to Assad last year (2012) against using chemical weapons”. There are THREE things to note here. First, notice “his own”. So the President only cares about HIMSELF? This is our latest example of ARROGANCE (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI). Secondly, again, the opinions on Syria are ANYTHING BUT “united”. On top of all this, once again, there are MORE THAN ENOUGH “complications” in the world today already.
“At a news conference in Stockholm on Wednesday (September 4 2013)“, Obama said: “My credibility IS NOT on the line. THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY’S CREDIBILITY IS ON THE LINE“. This is OBAMA‘s INTERPRETATION (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).
“While insisting that Obama has yet to prove his case, Putin appeared to temper his rhetoric slightly in the pre-summit interview with the AP, saying he WOULDN’T rule out backing a UN resolution if he is presented with “CONVINCING” evidence that Assad gassed his own people”. What is “convincing?” Once again this is open to INTERPRETATIONS (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).
Finally, “Obama’s deputy national security adviser, Ben Rhodes, CAST DOUBT on Putin’s softer tone, saying the U.S. was “HIGHLY skeptical” thatRussia would act differently if the U.N. Security Council were to take up the Syria issue again”. Well, the US has been “highly skeptical” of whatever Russia has planned to do FOR A LONG TIME NOW.
So, just like former president GEORGE W. BUSH went alone into IRAQ during the second Iraq war, IT SEEMS LIKE President Obama will have to do the same in Syria, because “world leaders” still seem EXTREMELY “reluctant” to join him.
