The title of a recently released Yahoo! article is “Obama to Boehner: NO TALKS UNTIL GOVERNMENT RE-OPENS” (Web-site/URL: http://news.yahoo.com/obama-boehner-no-talks-until-government-opens-161624563–finance.html).
“President Barack Obama called the top Republican in the GOP-controlled House Tuesday (October 8, 2013), telling Speaker John Boehner once again that he WON’T negotiate over reopening the government or must-pass legislation to prevent a U.S. default on its obligations”.
“The White House confirmed the call and said Obama repeated to Boehner “what he told him when they met at the White House last week: The Presdent IS WILLING to negotiate with Republicans — AFTER THE THREAT OF GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN AND DEFAULT HAVE BEEN REMOVED — over policies that Republicans think would strengthen the country“. Well THE GOVERNMENT IS ENTERING ITS SECOND WEEK IN SHUTDOWN MODE and “the threat of…default” also STILL HAS NOT been “removed”.
Boehner responded: “I want to HAVE A CONVERSATION (?)” IS THIS POSSIBLE? “I’m NOT drawing lines in the sand. It is time for us to JUST (?) sit down and resolve our differences“. So far at least this DOESN’T seem to be happening and whose fault is that? “There’s no boundaries here. THERE’S NOTHING ON THE TABLE (and) THERE’S NOTHING OFF THE TABLE“. Key Point: “There’s nothing ON the table”.
“For his part, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he is willing to negotiate over the budget, but only after the government is funded and the debt ceiling lifted”. “All we’re asking is that government be reopened. STOP THREATENING A CATASTROPHIC DEFAULT on the nation’s bills“. So, we have another suggestion that a “default” will be catastrophic” after the AL-JAZEERA article: “World fears POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC effects of US debt default” (Web-site/URL: http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2013/10/8/world-tells-us-thatadebtdefaultwouldbecatastrophic.html).
“Many Republicans in the Senate, including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Whip John Cornyn of Texas, have voted for so-called clean debt limit increases during Republican administrations”. MCCONNELL is up for re-election in 2014, having been most recently re-elected in 2008 (Web-site/URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitch_McConnell) so we have to wonder IF that’s playing a factor.
“Some Republicans seemed wary of participating in a filibuster that could RATTLE THE STOCK AND BOND MARKETS“. That’s a VERY LEGIT/REAL CONCERN.
According to Sen. Lisa Murkowski, “We SHOULDN’T be dismissing anything out of hand, whether it’s the debt ceiling or what we’re going to do with this government shutdown” again obviously. “We’ve got a situation where you’ve got a calendar running , you’ve got people who are FRUSTRATED and UPSET, so let’s FIGURE IT OUT“. This is the latest example of people being “upset” and FRUSTRATED, which is a fundamental characteristic of “Difficult People” (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI) and this in turn means that the politicians on Capitol Hill HAVEN’T “figured” ANYTHING “out” yet.
“Democrats from Obama on down to the most junior lawmakers said again that the House should vote immediately on ending the partial closure of the government. Obama said that Boehner “DOESN’T apparently want to see the … shutdown end at the moment, UNLESS he’s able to EXTRACT CONCESSIONS that DON’T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE BUDGET“. Again, this is true. All POLITICIANS want to “extract concessions”.
“Boehner, in rebuttal Monday (October 7, 2013), called on Obama to agree to negotiations on changes in “Obamacare” and steps to CURB DEFICITS, the principle GOP demands for ending the shutdown that began with the Oct. 1 beginning of the new fiscal year, and eliminating the threat of default”. “Really, Mr. President. It’s time to have that conversation (about DEFICITS) BEFORE OUR ECONOMY IS PUT FURTHER AT RISK“. BOEHNER is saying OBAMA is “(putting) our economy further at risk” while Obama is saying the opposite making this the latest/yet another example of “We think they made us mad; they think we made them mad and here we go” (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).
“The White House has said repeatedly (that) The President WILL NOT negotiate with Republicans UNTIL the government is FULLY reopened and the debt limit has been raised. But it (also) hasn’t said the debt limit measure has to be completely “clean” of add-ons”. There seems to be a contradiction here.
“White House aide Jason Furman told reporters (that) the White House could accept some add-ons IF Boehner “needs to have some talking point for his caucus that’s consistent with us not negotiating … that’s NOT adding a bunch of extraneous conditions“. Well, we know that’s NOT going to happen, because again, as we know, POLITICIANS are all about “adding a bunch of extraneous conditions”.
Finally, “Another White House official, Gene Sperling (Director of The National Economic Council), said the administration COULD BE open to an interim, short-term debt limit extension TO PREVENT A CATASTROPHIC DEFAULT“. Again, “could be” IS NOT a guarantee and once again, a “default” would be “catastrophic”.
To conclude, once again, it seems as if NO progress has been made as far as re-opening the government is concerned
