The title of a recently released Reuters article is “U.S. budget deal NEARS (?) amid CONSERVATIVE OPPOSITION” (Web-site/URL: http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/12/10/us-usa-fiscal-idUSBRE9B818S20131210).
“Budget negotiators in the U.S. Congress on Tuesday (December 10, 2013) were wrapping up a tentative deal on a budget plan to avoid aJanuary 15 government shutdown, amid warnings from conservative groups that they would oppose it“. Of course the “conservative group” that springs to mind immediately is THE TEA PARTY.
“The plan does not purport to be any “GRAND bargain” that would SLASH the federal deficit” AS EXPECTED (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI). On top of this, REPUBLICANS, more specifically TEA PARTIERS, are OBSESSED WITH “(slashing) the federal deficit”.
“Barbara Mikulski, who heads the Senate Appropriations Committee that would have to carry out any budget deal, told reporters”: “I am CAUTIOUSLY optimistic that we have a deal“, with emphasis on “cautiously”.
According to one Senate aide, “Democrats “are working to minimize … the size of the cut that Ryan has sought“, obviously/AS EXPECTED (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI). Again, Republicans want to “cut” and “slash” EVERYTHING WITH NO REGARD FOR ANYTHING ELSE. Life is like PORTFOLIO ANALYSIS. If a “portfolio” only has ONE thing in it (CHEAP vs. EXPENSIVE), it’s NOT a very strong “portfolio”.
According to William Allison, a Ryan spokesman, “Ryan “is still working WITH (?) Senator Murray to cut spending in a SMARTER (?) way. They HAVEN’T reached an agreement yet“. Is Congressman Ryan “working WITH Senator Murray” and HOW CAN WE “cut spending in a SMARTER way?” Both these questions are open to INTERPRETATIONS (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).
“Americans for Prosperity, which supports CUTTING taxes and government spending, called on Congressional Republicans to “STAND FIRM” in upholding a second round of across-the-board automatic SPENDING CUTS, which are scheduled to start in January (2014)”.
According to AFP (Americans For Prosperity) President Tim Phillips, “Otherwise, Congressional Republicans are joining LIBERAL Democrats in breaking their word to the American people to finally begin reining in government OVER-spending that has left us over $17 TRILLION IN DEBT”. This is typical Conservative GOP rhetoric.
Finally, “Late on Monday (December 9 2013), another conservative group, Heritage Action for America, an offshoot of the Heritage Foundation, announced that it also COULD NOT support the emerging budget deal“.
“The group complained that such a deal would increase spending “in the near-term for promises of WOEFULLY INADEQUATE LONG-TERM REDUCTIONS“. “woefully inadequate” is indeed a STRONG criticism (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-AJviZ8Itk), which is EXPECTED with JIM DEMINT a former senator from SOUTH CAROLINA now at the helm (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).
So, WILL THERE BE A BUDGET DEAL?
