The title of a recently released Yahoo! article is “India urges US to drop case against arrested female diplomat” (Web-site/URL: http://news.yahoo.com/tearful-indian-diplomat-tells-invasive-us-body-probe-070047090.html?soc_src=mediacontentstory).
“India Thursday (December 19, 2013) urged the United States to drop the case against a female diplomat who was arrested and strip-searched and apologize for her “TERRIBLE” treatment, RATCHETING UP PRESSURE in the BLISTERING DIPLOMATIC ROW“.
“US Secretary of State John Kerry expressed “REGRET” over the episode in New York, and India’s Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid said he hoped the “valuable relationship” with Washington would soon return to an even keel”. There are TWO things to note here. First, as we saw in 2001 “regret” DOES NOT necessarily = SORRY (Web-site/URL: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2001/apr/11/china.usa). On top of this, LET’S SEE IF INDIA still has a “valuable relationship” with the United States in light of this incident.
“But in a sign of the BRUISED PRIDE and HUMILIATION felt in India, Khurshid reiterated calls for the visa fraud case against the diplomat to be withdrawn and branded her treatment as “TERRIBLE“. The implied answer to the question we just posed is NO.
“Khurshid told foreign journalists” “We have asked for the case to be dropped and withdrawn … we are NOT convinced that there are legitimate grounds for pursuing it. I cannot believe if a US senator was arrested, he would be put through this (kind of) behavior….I would rather not prejudge.Let us allow the American government to respond“. Well “the US government” is DEFENSIVE on this one (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).
“Kerry TRIED to end the row in a phone call to India’s national security adviser on Wednesday (December 18, 2013), expressing regret and stressing concern that the issue not be allowed to hurt a “VITAL relationship“.
“But Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath said “a mere regret WON’T make us happy. They must OFFER A CLEAR APOLOGY and accept that they made a mistake, that is what we will be SATISFIED with“. This means that the Indian government WON’T be “happy” and “satisfied” for a LONG time.
“In an email to colleagues published Wednesday (December 18, 2013), Khobragade wrote that she was REPEATEDLY STRIP-SEARCHED and then subjected to a cavity (private body parts) search“.
“However, Preet Bharara, the US federal prosecutor handling her case, has INSISTED Khobragade was arrested in the “MOST DISCREET” way possible, was not handcuffed and was “fully searched” by a FEMALE deputy marshal in private as part of standard procedure”. This is open to INTERPRETATION (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).
“In an interview with Indian television, Khurshid acknowledged there was “a sense of HURT” over the treatment of the diplomat at a time whenthe Obama administration is looking to bolster ties with New Delhi”. Kurshid surely meant “a” DEEP “sense of hurt”.
“THINGS HAPPEN between friends, even things that are TERRIBLE“, he told the CNN-IBN network”. Sounds like Khurshid is taking PREETBAHARARA’s side here. ”My duty is NOT to allow anyone to damage relations, the relationship“. “…the relationship” (between the United States & India) HAS ALREADY BEEN “damaged”, perhaps “damaged” BEYOND REPAIR. ”We HOPE it will return (to normalcy) VERY SOON (?) This is an UNREALISTIC EXPECTATION (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).
“The diplomat’s father pressed for his daughter’s release, saying he would GO ON HUNGER STRIKE if action WAS NOT taken“. More specifically, Uttam Khobragade said: “NO COMPENSATION IS ENOUGH. WE ARE NOT BEGGARS“ obviously. This is an INSULT TO HUMAN DIGNITY.
“The US State Department said it was “particularly important to Secretary Kerry that foreign diplomats serving in the United States are accorded RESPECT and DIGNITY, just as we expect our own diplomats should receive overseas“. This clearly DID NOT happen. Devyani Khobragade’s “dignity” clearly WAS NOT “respected”.
“Bharara insisted his sole motivation was to uphold the rule of law, protect victims and hold accountable anyone who breaks the law “no matter how POWERFUL, RICH or CONNECTED they are“. This should be a message to people like GAO WEI (Web-site/URL: http://www.qcri.com/our-people/bio?par=acc&name=WeiGao&pid=44) and CUI XILING (Web-site/URL: http://www.hksyu.edu/ba/201208/lect/CuiXiling.html) who used a “connection” to get into THE CHINESE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG.
“But India’s foreign ministry spokesman lashed out at Bharara’s comments, saying “there is ONLY ONE victim in this case (and) that victim isDevyani Khobragade”. BINGO.
To conclude let’s return once again to the title: “India urges US to drop case against arrested female diplomat”. This DOES NOT look it’s going to happen…at least not right now. So this “diplomatic row” continues.
