The title of a recently released Reuters article is “Amanda Knox CONVICTED AGAIN of Briton’s (MEREDITH KERCHER‘s) murder” (Web-site/URL: http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/01/30/us-knox-verdict-guilty-idUSBREA0T1U520140130).
“American student Amanda Knox and her former Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were found guilty on Thursday for the second time of the 2007 murder of Briton Meredith Kercher, in a retrial that reversed an earlier appeal judgment”. This was the THIRD trial. THE KERCHER FAMILY appealed the second verdict that ACQUITTED Knox after THE KNOX FAMILY appealed the first verdict that CONVICTED Knox. So we see how in the Italian justice system, the appeals process seems to be ENDLESS.
“In a statement”, Knox said: “I am FRIGHTENED and saddened by this UNJUST verdict. Having been found innocent before, I EXPECTED better from the ITALIAN justice system“. There are THREE things to note here. First Knox is more FRIGHTENED than “saddened” because she surely DOESN’T want to GO BACK TO JAIL. Secondly this is NOT a REASONABLE EXPECTATION from Knox because as we said on numerous occasions, the ITALIAN justice system is DRASTICALLY different from the US justice system (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).
“Sollecito’s lawyer Giulia Bongiorno confirmed that her client would appeal to Italy’s highest court, and Knox’s lawyer Carlo Dalla Vedova said he was “STUNNED“. This was exactly the same reaction that Amanda Knox’s father, CURT KNOX, THREE HOURS AFTER Knox was convicted (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhFRwMee8rs). “The court will publish the reasons for its verdict in 90 days” or in 3 MONTHS. So, once again, we will have to WAIT.
“For Kercher’s family, who had pushed to have the appeal verdict overturned, the reaction was EQUALLY RAW“.
According to Stephanie Kercher, Meredith’s sister, “(speaking) after the ruling was read”, “We DIDN’T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT. WE ARE STILL IN SHOCK“, in a GOOD way or bad way?
“Knox, who is in the United States and would have to be extradited to serve her sentence, attacked the “OVERZEALOUS and intransigent (not willing to compromise; obstinately maintaining an attitude) prosecution” and “PREJUDICED and NARROW-MINDED investigation” and said she had been wrongfully prosecuted”, of course AS EXPECTED (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI). After all, this verdict went AGAINST her.
Finally, “Gabriele Giambrone, managing partner of Anglo-Italian law firm Giambrone Law, said it was “very UNLIKELY” (that) Knox would be extradited to serve her sentence”. More specifically, Giambrone, “who is not involved in the case”, said: “The U.S. will do everything to PROTECT THEIR OWN CITIZENS (as every country does) (and) they will MOUNT EVERY CHALLENGE POSSIBLE, so I DON’T think she’ll serve ANY time in an Italian jail“. In January, 2012 Knox said she would like to return to Italy at some point, “as a TOURIST” (Web-site/URL: http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/01/25/10232054-report-amanda-knox-loves-italy-and-might-return?lite) because being incarcerated certainly ISN’T appealing. Now Knox is all too eager to STAY AWAY.
So, once again, the question is: WILL KNOX BE EXTRADITED to serve her new EXTENDED sentence of 28.5 years? This is the latest twist in a DIPLOMATIC ROW that is entering its SEVENTH year and shows NO signs of abating any time soon.
