The title of a recently released CNN article is “WHAT’S NEXT for Amanda Knox?” (Web-site/URL: http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/31/justice/italy-knox-future/).
“Add one more UNCERTAINTY to the many questions that surround the Amanda Knox murder verdict: Will she wind up back in a cell in Italy?” “uncertainty” is something we DON’T need any more of.
“She (Knox) told ABC‘s “Good Morning America” on Friday (January 31 2014), “I will NEVER go WILLINGLY back. I’m going to FIGHT THIS UNTIL THE VERY END and it’s not right and it’s not fair and I’m going to do everything I can“. This is DEFENSIVE (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI). Also “I will never go willingly back” contradicts Knox’s former claim that she “LOVES Italy“ (Web-site/URL: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/25/amanda-knox-loves-italy-_n_1230784.html).
“Knox, who is American and living in the United States (Seattle, WA), said she watched the guilty verdict handed down Thursday (January 30 2014) by an Italian appeals court over the Internet, translating what was happening to family members who were with her. “This REALLY has HIT ME LIKE A TRAIN (WRECK). I DID NOT EXPECT this to happen“. This IS NOT a REASONABLE EXPECTATION (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI). Knox could argue this in 2007 when she was 20 (Web-site/URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amanda_Knox). If she still believes this now, SIX years after all of this started, then she’s IGNORANT. “I really expected so much better from the ITALIAN justice system“. Again let’s remind ourselves that the ITALIAN justice system is DRASTICALLY different from the American justice system. Jurors can deliberate with the trial in progress and (most importantly), jurors DON’T have to be screened for biases. “They found me innocent BEFORE, how can they say it’s guilty beyond a reasonable doubt (now)?” Again, as we’ve mentioned many times, in the ITALIAN justice system the appeals process can be ENDLESS.
“Knox, 26, said she “got my first cry” en route to the television station (ABC). “You have to stand up for yourself and you have to believe that it’s GOING TO BE OK“. IS IT “going to be OK?”
“Her lawyer was equivocal (the possibility of) about her possible extradition back to Italy, where she already spent four years in prison awaiting and during her first trial”. According to this attorney (Theodore Simon), “I can understand why that is THE QUESTION OF THE DAY“. “the question of the day”, of course, is: WILL AMANDA KNOX BE EXTRADITED to serve her 28-year sentence?
“He did note that the next court proceeding is “probably A YEAR AWAY” and confirmed that he planned to appeal. But many other questions must be answered first”. “It’s NOT really a question that is an issue today, or tomorrow, or for A LONG TIME TO COME. We have to await THE MOTIVATION that will be generated by the court, we have to see the basis upon which they have rendered their finding“. Again, the ITALIAN judicial system is full of ANTICS. “From that, THERE WILL BE AN APPEAL, a MINIMUM of one appeal. So, I understand why you might be posing the question today (January 31 2014), but it’s really not right for consideration, and I wouldn’t comment on that at this time“.
“Knox and her former boyfriend, Italian Raffaele Sollecito, were found guilty Thursday (January 31 2014) of the 2007 murder of Briton Meredith Kercher”.
“Prosecutors say she was HELD DOWN and STABBED after she rejected attempts by Knox, Sollecito and another man, Ivory Coast-born Rudy Guede, TO INVOLVE HER IN A SEX GAME“. So THIS WAS “a sex game” GONE HORRIBLY WRONG. “Guede is the only person still in jail for the murder”. His sentence was cut from from 30 years to 16 years after Knox and Sollecito were acquitted (Web-site/URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Meredith_Kercher#Rudy_Guede).
“Extradition would be a logical move, Kercher’s brother, Lyle, told reporters”. “In as much as, yes, if somebody’s found guilty — and this would go for anybody — if somebody’s (in this case AMANDA KNOX is) found GUILTY and CONVICTED of a murder. I DON’T SEE WHY THEY (Knox’s defense team) WOULDN’T (fight extradition)”
“CNN legal analyst Sonny Hostin said that Knox may be protected by U.S. law, which dictates that a person CANNOT be tried twice on the same charge”. “Because of this TENSION between Italian and U.S. law, it is UNLIKELY that U.S. law will extradite her (Knox). When THE FIGHT begins, those are the grounds that U.S. attorneys will be arguing“. There are TWO things to note here. First, there is “tension” between the United States and Italy BECAUSE OF the Knox case. Secondly, this “fight” will surely be A SLUGFEST. .
“A law professor disagreed”. Julian Ku, “a professor of transnational law at Hofstra University”, told Agence France-Presse: “They always forget she was CONVICTED first. “If Italy does file an extradition request with the U.S. State Department, Knox will have the right to challenge her transfer to Italy in a U.S. court. “The chances of her WINNING that ARE NOT high because there has to be some VERY STRONG claim she’d have to make to block her extradition” and all of Knox’s reasons thus far have been VERY WEAK. I followed the trial, it was SLOW, but I NEVER got the sense that it was UNFAIR“. So the Chinese join the BRITISH and the ITALIANS in having NEGATIVE opinions of Amanda Knox (Ku is ETHNICALLY Chinese).
“But legal rules may not necessarily be followed when it comes to the HIGH PROFILE case, said ABC‘s legal analyst, Dan Abrams”. “You have to believe that, despite what all the lawyers will tell you, that this will come down to some degree to POLITICS“, of course/AS EXPECTED (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI). POLITICIANS & CELEBRITIES ALWAYS think rules are for OTHER PEOPLE. Knox is a CELEBRITY.
“Would the State Department approve an extradition request? “I think, with all of the PUBLIC SUPPORT for Amanda Knox, that is UNLIKELY“. This is what Abrams BELIEVES (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).
“CNN legal analyst Paul Callan said that, IF Knox does wind up being sent back to Italy, it WON’T happen soon“. “We are VERY far away from the day when she (Knox) gets extradited“. This is what Callan BELIEVES (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).
“Harvard Law (School) professor Alan Dershowitz said Knox’s looks and public support may help her. “As POPULAR as she is here and as PRETTY as she is here (the United States) — because that’s what this is all about, if she was not an attractive woman, we wouldn’t have the group love-in — she WILL BE extradited if it’s upheld” and this more likely than not WILL BE “upheld”. Also “popular” “pretty” and “attractive” SHOULDN’T have anything to do with this. A CRIMINAL IS A CRIMINAL. Looks and connections SHOULDN’T have anything to do with this. Again this reminds us of GAO WEI (Web-site/URL: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/wei-gao/39/336/315) and CUI XILING (Web-site/URL: http://www.hksyu.edu/ba/201208/lect/CuiXiling.html) here because they USED A RELATIONSHIP to get admitted into the Chinese University of Hong Kong & DRAGGED OUT their studies WAY longer than they should have been allowed to. Gao took SIX years to complete a PhD while Cui took EIGHT while publishing only THREE papers up to that point and taking the time to have TWO kids. That is RIDICULOUS. “The Italian legal system,THOUGH I DON’T LOVE IT, is a LEGITIMATE legal system and we have a treaty with Italy so I DON’T see how we would resist“. Dershowitz has QUITE A DIFFERENT INTERPRETATION (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).
“Dershowitz told CNN last March (2013) that, EVEN IF Knox avoids extradition, “SHE REMAINS A PRISONER in the United States, because Interpol WILL PUT A WARRANT OUT FOR HER (arrest) and, if she travels anywhere outside the United States, she’ll be IMMEDIATELY ARRESTED and turned over to Italy”. So there are TWO options for Knox (stay in the United States or be extradited to Italy) and NEITHER of them sound good.
“The Kercher family welcomed Thursday’s (January 30, 2014) ruling, which overturns the previous decision to ACQUIT Knox and Sollecito”. The SECOND trial overturned the FIRST trial’s GUILTY verdict. According to Francesci Maresca, the (Kercher) family’s attorney, “They (the Kerchers) are TIRED OF THIS and want JUSTICE“. What is “justice?” This is open to INTERPRETATIONS (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).
“The case has DRAGGED ON for SIX years“. According to Kercher’s sister Stephanie, “I think we are still ON THE JOURNEY to the truth“. This has been and will continue to be a LONG “journey”. “I think it may be the fact that WE DON’T EVER REALLY KNOW what happened that night (November 1, 2007), which is obviously something WE WILL HAVE TO COME TO TERMS WITH“. WILL THIS OCCUR/HAPPEN?
Finally, “Lyle Kercher, Meredith’s brother, said the family may have to wait until spring 2015 for a final resolution, since the verdicts reached Thursday (January 30, 2014) CAN STILL be appealed at Italy’s Supreme Court”. “NOTHING is going to bring Meredith back, NOTHING WILL TAKE AWAY THE HORROR OF WHAT HAPPENED TO HER. The BEST we can hope for is finally bringing this whole case to a conclusion, HAVING A CONVICTION and (then) everyone can move on with their lives“. Well, COMPROMISE is A VIRTUE in life. Unfortunately, NEITHER side is willing to compromise right now.
To conclude, let’s return once again to the title: “What’s next for Amanda Knox?” Surely, more DRAMA.
