The title of a recently released Reuters article is ”NFL hopeful Michael Sam comes out as GAY” (Web-site/URL: http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/02/10/us-usa-football-gay-idUSBREA1901Z20140210).
“Michael Sam, a STAR COLLEGE football player who is potentially a top prospect in the National Football League’s (NFL) upcoming draft, came out as gay in a video posted on the New York Times website on Sunday (February 9, 2014), and could become the NFL’s first openly gay player”. As we’ve seen, ”star COLLEGE (players)” MAY or MAY NOT make it in professional sports. Many “college…stars” DON’T get drafted and many FIRST round draft picks DON’T last in the PROFESSIONAL ranks.
“In the video”, Sam, a defensive lineman, said: “I’m Michael Sam. I’m a football player and I’m GAY“. “gay” is clearly THE BOMBSHELL here. ”I just want to OWN MY TRUTH before anyone breaks a story about me“. OK, ”owning (one’s) truth” IS IMPORTANT.
“Gay rights organizations greeted Sam’s announcement with ENTHUSIASM”, AS EXPECTED (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI). “Sarah Kate Ellis, the president of GLAAD, a media advocacy organization, said Sam had “RE-WRITTEN THE SCRIPT for countless young athletes. With ACCEPTANCE (?) of (gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender) people RISING across our coasts – in our schools, churches and workplaces – it’s clear that America IS READY (?) for an openly gay football STAR (?)” There are TWO things to note here. First, ”is America ready for an openly gay NFL” PLAYER? On top of this, IS Michael Sam a “star?” Both of these statements are OPINIONS which are INTERPRETATIONS (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).
“The NFL also released a statement on Sunday (February 9, 2014) IN SUPPORT OF Sam”.
“In a statement released on its web-site”, the NFL said: “We ADMIRE Michael Sam’s HONESTY and COURAGE“. Well it also takes “courage” (now) to realize that MOST people ARE NOT LGBT. “Michael Sam is A FOOTBALL PLAYER. Any player with ABILITY (?) and determination can succeed in the NFL”. Does Sam have the “ability” to play in THE NFL? Again, this is open to INTERPRETATIONS (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI). Let’s see IF he has a job by September (2014).
“In the Times video, Sam said that when he first spoke with his teammates about his sexuality last August (2013), they RALLIED AROUND him and SUPPORTED him“. ”Is this a huge deal?” For many people, IT IS “a huge deal”, in a POSITIVE or NEGATIVE way. ”I understand that IT IS. But my purpose and focus right now is playing football” while also DRAWING ATTENTION TO HIS SEXUALITY. “I probably may be the first, but I WON’T BETHE LAST. And I think only GOOD things is gonna come from this.” This is an EXPECTATION (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).
Finally, “Brian Ellner, a gay-rights activist and board member of the group Athlete Ally, said, “We EXPECT the leadership at NFL teams around the country, and the league (the NFL) itself, to wholeheartedly embrace the change that is not only sweeping our nation in the form of law, but also DEFINING our playing fields and culture“. This is another EXPECTATION (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI). “How Michael Sam is received on the professional level will go a long way in DEFINING the NFL’s LEGACY“. Again, this is EXPECTED from A GAY RIGHTS ACTIVIST (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).
To conclude, by disclosing his gay sexual orientation MICHAEL SAM HAS PLACED HIMSELF SMACK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LGBT DEBATE. We have to wonder IF this was only A PUBLICITY STUNT. This reminds us of JEREMY LIN who became only the SECOND ASIAN player to make it in the NBA (after YAO MING). However, Lin was OVER-HYPED TO AN EXTREME/people were GOING CRAZY over him, especially in CHINA, HONG KONG & TAIWAN. This was especially true after Lin led the Knicks on a SEVEN-game win streak which came crashing down when he went 1-11 (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15Z0US7lPp4). The Knicks were also BOUNCED in the FIRST round that year (2011-2012). On top of this, he only lasted in New York for ONE season (2011-2012). There was also a whole bunch of stuff about his RELIGION, WHICH HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH Jeremy Lin THE BASKETBALL PLAYER or Jeremy Lin THE ATHLETE. Professional athletes should ultimately be judged on whether they help their teams WIN/IMPROVE, INSTEAD OF RACE or SEXUAL ORIENTATION.
